Hydro and Water Turbines

Small Scale Hydro Turbines - Hydro power is a mature and proven technology; it is perhaps the oldest method of harnessing renewable energy. Hydro power systems convert the kinetic energy stored in a head of water into movement to turn a turbine in order to produce electricity.

The first water wheels were used for irrigation over 2000 years ago, later they were applied to milling and by the time of the Industrial Revolution their use was extensive.

Hydro Turbines

Hydro power requires the water source to be relatively close to the site of power usage, or to a suitable connection to the national grid.

Hydro turbines systems can be grid connected or stand-alone. We supply systems of 25kW and upwards.

About for Hydro Power:

In a system connected to the grid, any electricity generated in excess consumption on site can be sold to utility companies.

In an off-grid hydro system, electricity can be supplied directly to the devices to be powered, or via a battery bank and inverter set up.

System Sizing - The energy available in a body of water depends on the amount of water flowing per second, and the head.

Hydro electric systems are generally divided into 2 categories:

  • Low head - could include old mill sites with a weir and sluice
  • High head – could include fast flowing upland streams.
