People have been producing energy from Biomass for centuries, and in many parts of the world it is still the principle source of heat. However, modern technologies are far more efficient than open fires and an increasing range of fuels are now being utilised.
Wood chip boilers have the benefit of being able to accept low or zero cost fuels for commercial and business applications.
Biomass includes forest products, untreated wood products, short rotation coppice (SRC) e.g. willow, miscanthus (elephant grass).
Applications for Biomass:
The fuel usually takes the form of wood pellets or wood chips.

Wood pellets are a compact form of wood, which have a low moisture content and a high energy density. Although they are currently more expensive than wood chip, they are easier to handle and ideal for automated systems.
The type of fuel you choose to use has a direct effect on the equipment and the storage space required.
The principles and technologies of wood pellet and wood chip boilers are very similar however wood pellet boilers are mass produced and lighter in design than wood chip boilers and as a consequence wood pellet boilers are lower cost.
